Roblox Script Execution — How Scripts Actually Work (2026)
Ever wondered what actually happens when you execute a script in Roblox? This guide breaks down the technical process behind script execution — from how executors work to how Lua code interacts with the game. No advanced programming knowledge required.
What Is Script Execution?
Script execution is the process of running custom Lua code inside a Roblox game. Normally, only the game developer's scripts run during gameplay. Executors bypass this restriction, letting you inject and run your own scripts that interact with the game's objects, functions, and data.
How Roblox Games Work
To understand script execution, you need to know how Roblox games are structured:
Client — Your computer. Runs the game locally, handles rendering, input, and local scripts.
Server — Roblox's cloud. Manages game state, player data, and authoritative game logic.
When you join a Roblox game, your client downloads the game's assets and scripts. The client then runs local scripts that handle visuals, UI, and some game logic. The server runs authoritative scripts that manage things like currency, inventory, and anti-cheat.
What Is an Executor?
An executor is a program that injects custom Lua code into the running Roblox process. It acts as a bridge between you and the game's scripting environment:
Injection — The executor attaches to the Roblox process and loads its own DLL into the game's memory
Environment Setup — It creates a sandbox with access to Roblox's Lua functions and objects
Script Execution — Your script runs inside this sandbox, able to read and modify game objects
Think of it like this: Roblox games are built with Lego blocks (objects, scripts, data). An executor gives you access to the same Lego set, letting you rearrange blocks however you want.
The Execution Pipeline
Here's what happens step-by-step when you execute a script:
Step 1: Injection — The executor's DLL is loaded into the Roblox process memory
Step 2: Hook Installation — The executor hooks into Roblox's Lua VM (virtual machine) to intercept function calls
Step 3: Environment Creation — A new Lua state is created with access to Roblox's game objects
The entire process takes milliseconds. Once complete, your script runs as if it were part of the game itself.
Client-Side vs Server-Side
This is the most important concept in script execution:
Client-Side — Scripts that run on your computer. You can modify anything client-side: visuals, local physics, your character's position, UI elements. ESP, speed hacks, and fly are client-side.
Server-Side — Scripts that run on Roblox's servers. You cannot directly modify server-side data from a script. Currency, inventory, and game state are server-authoritative.
This is why scripts can show you enemy positions (client-side data) but can't add currency to your account (server-side data). Any script claiming to give you free Robux or server-side items is a scam.
Common Script Functions
Roblox scripts use these core functions to interact with the game:
game:GetService() — Access game services like Players, Workspace, RunService
Instance.new() — Create new objects (parts, GUI elements, etc.)
Why Some Scripts Stop Working
Scripts break for several reasons:
Game Updates — When a game developer changes their code, scripts that relied on specific function names or object paths break
Roblox Updates — Roblox occasionally changes how the Lua VM works, requiring executor updates
Anti-Cheat Updates — New anti-cheat measures can detect and block script injection methods
How Anti-Cheat Detects Scripts
Anti-cheat systems use several methods to detect script execution:
DLL Scanning — Detect injected DLLs in the game process
Memory Integrity — Check for unexpected modifications to game memory
Behavioral Analysis — Flag unnatural player behavior like impossible accuracy or teleportation
Final Thoughts
Understanding how script execution works helps you make better decisions about which scripts to use and how to stay safe. Scripts operate in the client-side environment, giving you control over visuals and local game logic but not server-authoritative data.
